The smell has been wafting from your drain for days. Perhaps it’s caused by your last meal — it doesn’t matter, only that the smell is horrendous. You may think the escaping fumes can melt houseplants on contact and that your only option is to get a plumber to take care of it. There’s no need to be hasty, as this may not be the case.
Your sink just needs good purging, and you can clean clogged drains with a simple cup of vinegar and a cup of baking soda.
Think Fifth Grade Volcano Experiment
To properly clean clogged drains, empty a cup of baking soda into your drain and let it settle for a minute. Next, and you may wish to use safety glasses for this part, pour 1/4 cup of vinegar in the drain, stand back, and witness the return of Mount Vesuvius. As the mixture of vinegar and baking soda works to dissolve the hidden roughage — which may pose a possible health risk — you can relax knowing you’re making your home a safer place.
Take it Slow
When the first eruption ends, pour another 1/4 cup of vinegar in your drain — yes, there’s still life in that old gopher hole. The mixture will foam up again due to the compaction of the baking soda and vinegar.
Give it Time
Repeat this process twice more, using the remaining vinegar. Once everything is battling out like rabid badgers, let it sit for two minutes, then pour a gallon of boiling water down your drain as a chaser. This will get rid of all the loosened gunk, so it won’t hang around to cause future problems.
