Pipe Works Services It doesn’t matter whether you want to save money or save the environment – you can do both by reducing your home’s water consumption. Water gets used in a lot of ways, and there are just as many ways to conserve, so follow these simple tips to reduce water flow and start saving.

Saving Water in the Kitchen
  • Replace old washers. If your sink drips once per second, it can waste thousands of gallons of water per year. By repairing dripping faucets, you will save water.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet every time you’d like a cold drink.
  • Never run the dishwasher until it’s full.
  • Defrost frozen food items in the microwave instead of using warm water.
  • Start a compost pile so you don’t have to waste water running your garbage disposal.
Saving Water in the Bathroom
  • Check for toilet leaks by adding food coloring to the tank and waiting to see if it appears in the bowl within half an hour.
  • Take shorter showers and install a low-flow shower head.
  • Replace your toilet handle if it constantly sticks in the flush position and causes the water to run.
  • Shut off running water during your daily grooming, such as shaving.
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily to dispose of tissues and other waste items.
Saving Water Outside
  • Don’t water your lawn more than you have to. Lawns typically don’t need to be watered more than once every 5 to 7 days.
  • Add mulch to your garden and around the base of trees and shrubs. This helps the soil retain moisture, so you don’t have to water them as often.
  • Reduce water flow by fixing or replacing leaky hoses and nozzles.
  • Set your sprinkler so it only waters your lawn – not the sidewalk and driveway.
