Higher water bills often go hand-in-hand with higher gas or electric bills, since more gas or electricity is used to heat water. Reducing the amount of water, you use in your northern New Jersey home daily can help you save money and make your home more energy efficient. Here are some simple waters saving tips to follow throughout the year.
Repair Leaks
Check your sinks, toilets, pipes, outdoor sprinkler systems, and shower heads for leaks, and have them fixed promptly. Leaks can result in several gallons of water being wasted, which can make your water bills increase significantly in a short amount of time.
Use Appliances Efficiently
Don’t run your dishwasher or washing machine until you have a full load. When you do use these appliances, make sure they’re set to the correct load size or water level. You can also reduce water usage by scraping off your dishes instead of rinsing them off before putting them in the dishwasher.
Install Low-Flow Fixtures
Low-flow faucets and shower heads can help you save a considerable amount of water compared to older fixtures, especially those made before 1992. Choose low-flow shower heads that have a flow rate of lower than 2.5 gallons per minute and bathroom and kitchen faucet aerators that have a flow rate of 1 gallon per minute or less.
Take Showers
Showers use much less water than baths, especially if you keep them short. When you a take bath, lower the hot water as the tub fills up. Also, don’t run the water until you’ve plugged the drain.
Install High-Efficiency Toilets
Replace older toilets with high-efficiency models, which use 1.6 gallons or less of water each time you flush. Since flushing toilets are one of the biggest sources of water use in homes, investing in one of these more efficient toilets should lead to a noticeable difference in your water bills.
