Toilet clogs can be a very messy plumbing problem. It can be difficult to determine where exactly the obstruction is located since most clogs form at the top of the trap. Clogged toilets can back up and overflow, but a slow flush can also indicate that a clog is forming. While you may be able to remove minor clogs yourself, a qualified plumber will have the skills to handle serious issues when they arise.

Removing a Toilet Clog with a Plunger

Water should be added to your toilet bowl if it’s empty. There should be enough to cover the plunger.
The plunger should be placed over the opening in the bowl so that it forms a seal around the opening.

  • You should push back the plunger handle in the direction of the toilet tank as this may draw the clog out.
  • Next, push the plunger down over the opening in the bowl to force water into it. This may help break up the clog and force it out.

The above steps may be repeated several times. If they don’t work, the next step is to use the toilet auger.

Removing a Toilet Clog with an Auger

  • The corkscrew tip should be fed into the opening until it meets the clog. Then, as much cable as needed should be dispensed.
  • The auger should be turned clockwise, and pressure should be applied to force the tip through the clog, which may break it up. If water drains out of the toilet, this means the clog has been removed.
