Was this you inside your living room in early January? Yes, January brought us single-digit temperatures and a lot of frozen pipes! The phones were ringing off the hook with emergency calls for residential and commercial clients. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but February 7-8th is going to bring back the big chill. What can you do about it? Pipe Works Services decided to put a top ten list of preventative tactics to save you time and money.

  1. Running water, even a trickle, can help prevent pipes from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate the plumbing. Keep any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children. Make sure the garage doors are closed if there are water lines in the garage. https://pipeworksservices.com/insulation/garage-insulation/
  2. Keep the thermostat at the same temperature day and night. Your heating bill may be a little higher, but you could avoid a more costly repair job if your pipes freeze and burst. Adding extra insulation to exposed pipes is recommended.
  3. Change your furnace filter every 2-4 months.
  4. If you are using a fireplace, use a fire screen large enough to catch sparks and prevent the flooring from catching on fire.
  5. If you have single-paned glass windows you may want to turn the heat up a few degrees. https://pipeworksservices.com/insulation/air-sealing/
  6. You may need extra moisturizer for your skin and use a humidifier in your home if you are experiencing static electricity in your home.
  7. It might also be a good idea to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. Disposable hand and feet warming pads are a lifesaver.
  8. Find the most common places where heat is escaping from your home to eliminate drafts. Turn your ceiling fans to run back to push the heat down since the heat rises. Ask us about our Home Energy Audits info@pwsnj.com
  9. Prevent ice dams by cleaning debris out of your gutters to allow snow and water to flow away from your home. Adding additional insulation to your attic is also a big help.
  10. Installing a generator that kicks on in case of a power outage is peace of mind all year.
