Our Electrician arrived to look at an attic exhaust fan which was found to be inoperative during a home inspection. The fan motor has excessive drag, indicating a failed bearing. He tested the thermostat and the power to the fan, 120v is present and the thermostat was working, however the motor will not turn due to the bearings being seized and just hums in a locked up state.
There is a service switch by the fan to disconnect power. The tech turned it off so it will not try to come on if the thermostat closes. A locked motor will overheat and can cause a fire if left energized for an extended period of time.
