There are many reasons why you might want your furnace to run for a longer period, or even continuously. One of the main reasons is that it can be more energy efficient for your furnace to run for longer at lower speeds, rather than to kick into high gear, run for a few minutes, turn off and then repeat this countless times every time the temperature changes a degree or two.
Another big reason for keeping your furnace running longer is that certain peripherals for your HVAC system (such as whole-house humidifiers, air filters, and ventilation systems) require your furnace blower to be running and circulating air to do its jobs effectively. If you want to take advantage of the benefits of having your furnace running for a longer time at a lower speed, you will need a furnace with a variable-speed blower motor.
If you have a single-speed blower motor, your blower will either run at full speed or it will be off. This is because a single-speed blower motor has a hard-wired speed that cannot be changed — so it always runs at full speed every time it is on. A variable-speed blower motor, on the other hand, can run at different speeds, depending on the need. There are usually three or more different speeds available, and one of those gives you the option to run the motor continuously at a low throttle so the furnace can stay on for longer periods and use less energy while doing so.
In addition to allowing, you to run your peripherals, a variable-speed blower motor also allows you to save energy because your furnace only works as hard as it needs to. The furnace will also have a longer life span because it won’t be working as hard all the time and will run more quietly when it is operating.
