You are eligible to claim the energy-efficient home improvement credit for upgrades made to your primary residence. Your main home is typically where you spend most of your time.
If you carry out qualifying energy-efficient upgrades to your home after January 1, 2023, you may be eligible for a tax credit of up to $3,200. This credit is available for improvements made until the end of 2032.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the energy efficiency home improvement credit, your home must meet the following conditions:
- It must be located in the United States.
- It must be an existing home that you enhance or expand, rather than a new construction.
- Typically, it must be your primary residence, where you live most of the year. You cannot claim this credit if you are a landlord or a property owner who does not reside in the home.
- A compact module delivers refrigerant to a compact wall-mounted handler
- A single exterior compressor unit supplies one or more room handlers
- If you don’t have ductwork
- If you need to cool an addition or attic
