Type, size & fuel details
Some gas water heaters are calibrated to burn natural gas, while others are set up to burn propane, also commonly known as LPG or LP gas. A tank-type gas water heater is essentially a storage tank with a central flue that also serves as a heat exchanger (see drawing). 60-gallon and 80-gallon water heaters and two of the most common sizes for homes equipped with tank-type water heaters.
Like other tank-type water heaters, a gas-fired, tank-type water heater contains several critical components: temperature control, sacrificial anode, relief valve, cold & hot water supply lines, drain valve, and tank insulation.
Tankless water heaters can also utilize natural gas or LPG as the heating fuel. Instead of storing a supply of heated water that’s always ready for use, a tankless water heater activates its heating element only when someone opens a hot water tap or turns on a washing machine or dishwasher.
Since it only uses energy in “demand” mode, this type of water heater can cut water heating expenses in households where hot water goes unused for long periods.
