Boiler replacement is not anyone’s favorite task. But if yours gives out or is not working efficiently enough, it’s a necessary task. If your boiler is more than 10 years old, overly worn, inefficient, or significantly oversized, replacing it with a new, highly efficient model will deliver solid energy and money savings.

Boiler replacement is an especially good idea if your boiler used to burn coal and was changed over to oil or gas. When replacing your boiler, it is important to work with a qualified heating professional who can help you decide which product is right for your needs. A heating and cooling professional will determine the proper size boiler and help you choose the level of energy efficiency that makes the most economic sense for you.

It’s important to look for an Energy Star-certified boiler; products that earn this label follow strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. They are the most energy-efficient models available and will save you money. Boiler output is measured in annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE). The minimum AFUE rating for oil- or gas-burning boilers is 80 percent, and 75 percent for a steam boiler.

Electric boilers do not lose energy through chimneys as fuel-burning boilers do, so they have AFUE ratings from 95 to 100 percent. Despite these high-efficiency ratings, the steep cost of electricity can drive up the operating expense of electric boilers. Energy Star-labeled boilers have AFUE ratings of 85 percent or higher, and they have a series of structural advantages over older models, including electronic ignition (eliminating the need for a constantly burning pilot light), new combustion methods that extract more heat from the same quantity of fuel and sealed combustion technology that uses outdoor air to fuel the burner (this reduces drafts while increasing safety).
