If it’s time to invest in a new high-efficiency furnace or boiler, you may be wondering how much money you can save on your energy bills with an upgrade in technology.
When shopping for a high-efficiency heating system, the first thing to look for is the unit’s annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating, which gauges energy efficiency. The higher the AFUE rating, the greater the energy efficiency.
If a furnace or boiler carries an AFUE rating of 90 percent, that means it converts 90 percent of its energy into heat and wastes only 10 percent. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save a significant amount of money for every 5 percent in gained efficiency. For example, upgrading your furnace or boiler with a 50 percent AFUE to a high-efficiency unit with a 95 percent AFUE will save you $47.36 for every $100 of fuel costs annually. Using those figures, you can see that if your annual fuel costs are $1,000, investing in a high-efficiency furnace or boiler will cut that figure by $437.46.
