Ceiling fans are a great option for cutting your air conditioning costs while still maintaining a comfortable temperature in the room. However, this is true only if you use the fans properly.   1. Turn off the air conditioning when the fans can do the job. Try this during moderate outside temperatures. If either the A/C or the ceiling fans can keep you cool, opt for the latter since fans are much cheaper to operate. Often, you can keep the A/C off for part of the day with the ceiling fans doing the work. Even if you only do this a few hours a day, you will see a dent in your energy use.
  2. Set the A/C to a higher temperature when using ceiling fans. Ceiling fans don’t lower the temperature in a room; they create a wind-chill effect that makes the room feel cooler for occupants. This will allow you to turn up the thermostat for the A/C a few degrees without losing any comfort, thus saving money with ceiling fans.
  3. Turn ceiling fans off in unoccupied rooms. Fans are cool people. When there is no one in the room to benefit from the moving air, they’re not providing any benefits. They’re wasting energy and providing a slight amount of heat to a room, by the action of the fan motor. Even this small amount of heat will cause your A/C to kick on that much quicker.

As you can see, saving money with ceiling fans is simple enough, as long as you use them properly. If you apply these rules consistently, you may see up to 15 percent savings on your A/C costs.
