When your home’s A/C is blowing hot air, it’s a problem akin to a car that won’t drive or a vacuum that won’t clean. Homeowners can address some malfunctioning air conditioner issues, while others will need professional attention.
Problems You Can Address Yourself
- The thermostat isn’t set to “cooling” – This is a common reason an A/C is blowing hot air. If a thermostat is set to “heating,” that’s what it will do until the temperature reaches the thermostat setting.
- The fan setting isn’t correct – An incorrect fan setting on the thermostat will result in non-cooled air being circulated while the A/C components are off. Make sure the fan setting is on “auto” rather than “fan only” or “on.”
- The air filter is dirty – If the filter is clogged with dust and debris, the A/C’s air handler will have to work harder to push air through the system. The compressor can also be adversely affected. It will take longer to cool the home, and the air coming from the supply registers won’t be as cool as you want. A dirty air filter also will stress parts and eventually lead to mechanical failure.
- Airflow is restricted – This can happen inside if objects such as rugs and furniture are covering supply or return registers. Outside, yard debris such as leaves, brush, and high grass can impede airflow to the condenser/compressor unit. This will interfere with the heat-exchange process in the outside unit.
Issue a Pro Should Handle
- Dirty coils – Both inside and outside coils should be kept clean, so heat exchange occurs unimpeded. Dirty coils can result in the air not feeling cool enough.
- The refrigerant level is low – If the refrigerant in your A/C is undercharged, cooling performance and efficiency will be negatively affected. The technician should top off the refrigerant level to manufacturer specs and check for leaks if the pressure is low.
